    Joints

    Joints are the places where bones meet, but in the context of yoga, they are far more than simple connection points. They determine how movement happens, how much movement is available, and where limitations arise.
    It is common to approach practice with the idea that increased flexibility will automatically improve movement. However, not all limitations come from muscles or soft tissues. A significant part of how a joint moves is shaped by its structure, particularly the way bones are formed and how they fit together.
    Modern research supports this perspective, showing that joint mobility is influenced not only by muscles and ligaments, but also by bone architecture.
    This means that differences between individuals are not always a matter of being “tight” or “flexible,” but often reflect natural variation in how the body is built.
    Every joint has two important qualities:
    Structure: the way bones fit together
    Function: the movement allowed (or limited) by that structure

    The shape determines the range,
    The surrounding tissues determine the experience.

    Synovial joints
    Most of the movements performed in yoga take place in synovial joints. These joints are freely movable and are supported by synovial fluid, which allows smooth and controlled motion. Within this category, several joint types appear regularly in practice, each with a specific structure and movement pattern.


    Ball-and-socket joints, such as the
    shoulders and hips, allow movement in
    multiple directions, including rotation.
    These joints are often associated with
    larger ranges of motion, such as hip
    opening or overhead arm positioning.

     

     

    Hinge joints, including the knees and elbows, primarily allow movement in one
    plane, through flexion and extension. Although they are often described as simple joints, they are placed under significant load in many postures. While small additional movements can occur, these joints are not designed for large rotational forces.
    Pivot joints allow rotational movement 

    and are found, for example, in the
    upper cervical spine and the forearm.
    In practice, they are involved in actions
    such as turning the head in twists or
    rotating the forearm in weight-bearing
    positions.
    Condyloid joints, such as the wrist,
    allow movement in multiple directions
    but without full rotation. The wrists play
    a key role in many yoga sequences,
    particularly in positions that require
    weight-bearing.

     

    The saddle joint, located at the base of the thumb, allows movement in multiple planes and supports grip and manipulation. While it is less visible in larger postures, it becomes relevant when using props or adjusting hand positioning.
    Gliding joints allow small, subtle sliding movements between bones and are found in areas such as the spine, the shoulder complex, and the feet.
    Other types of joints
    Not all joints are designed for large or visible movement. Fibrous joints, such as the sutures of the skull, have little to no mobility and serve primarily protective functions. These joints are not directly involved in asana, but they highlight that not all connections in the body are meant to move.


    Cartilaginous joints allow a small degree of movement and are cushioned by cartilage. Examples include the connections between the ribs and the sternum, as well as the joints between vertebrae. In yoga, these joints contribute to more subtle aspects of movement, such as the expansion of the ribcage during breathing and the adaptability of the spine in forward folds and backbends.


    Understanding joints shifts the focus of practice. Instead of asking how far a posture can be taken, the question becomes how a joint is designed to move and how that movement can be supported.
    This distinction is important because not all bodies will look the same in a posture, and not all ranges of motion are available to everyone. What may appear as limitation is often a reflection of structure rather than restriction.
    When movement is approached with this perspective, practice becomes more precise and more sustainable. Rather than pushing toward a uniform ideal, it becomes possible to work with the body as it is, respecting both its capabilities and its boundaries.
    In this sense, yoga is not defined by how deep a posture appears, but by how appropriately and intelligently it is performed.
