Hypermobility in Yoga: When flexibility needs stability
In yoga, flexibility is often seen as a sign of progress: deep backbends, effortless splits, and graceful shapes can look impressive in a yoga room. Many practitioners spend years working toward greater flexibility.
But, for some people, flexibility was never the challenge → some bodies are naturally able to move far beyond what is considered a typical range of motion. This is known as hypermobility, and while it can look like a natural advantage in yoga, it also comes with its own challenges. Understanding hypermobility can help us practice yoga in a way that supports long-term joint health, strength, and stability.
Hypermobility refers to joints that move beyond the normal physiological range of motion. This usually happens because the connective tissues that stabilize the joints (especially ligaments) are more elastic than average.
Many hypermobile people can easily touch the floor with straight legs, hyperextend their elbows, or move into deep stretches without much preparation.
Some people are only hypermobile in certain joints, such as their elbows or knees. Others experience generalized hypermobility, meaning several joints throughout the body move more freely than usual.
Common areas where hypermobility appears include knees, elbows, shoulders,
wrists, hips, or spine.
Because yoga often celebrates flexibility, hypermobile practitioners may initially feel very comfortable in many poses - it’s important to keep in mind that flexibility alone does not necessarily mean a joint is well supported.
Hypermobility and joint stability
The main challenge of hypermobility is joint instability. When ligaments are more elastic, the body relies more heavily on the surrounding muscles to stabilize the joints. If those muscles are not actively engaged, the body may begin to rely on passive structures like ligaments and joint capsules for support.
→ Over time, this can lead to discomfort or injury.
Research has shown that people with joint hypermobility may experience
higher rates of:
- joint pain
- shoulder instability
- hip discomfort
- sprains and strains
- fatigue during physical activity
In yoga practice, hypermobile students may notice that they can easily move into deep stretches but feel shaky or fatigued during poses that require strength and stability.
For these practitioners, the goal of yoga often shifts from increasing flexibility to building control and strength.
Am I hypermobile?
Hypermobility exists on a spectrum, and many people have mild forms without realizing it. Some signs that may indicate joint hypermobility include…
… knees or elbows that bend slightly backwards when straight.
… feeling “loose” or unstable in certain joints.
… frequent joint popping or clicking.
… being naturally flexible without much stretching.
… feeling strong in flexibility poses but less comfortable in strength-based poses.
Clinically, joint hypermobility is sometimes assessed using the Beighton Score, a screening method used by medical professionals. If you don’t have a clinical assessment available, that’s totally fine! You do not need a formal assessment to begin practicing with more awareness. Listening to your body is always the most valuable guide.
Hypermobility and Yoga practice
For hypermobile practitioners, the practice becomes about developing stability, muscular engagement, and body awareness (rather than mindless flexibility). This means paying attention to how the joints are supported within each posture.
Rather than collapsing into the end range of a joint, the goal is to maintain
active control throughout the movement.
In practice, this may look like…
… keeping a slight micro-bend in the elbows or knees.
… engaging the surrounding muscles before deepening a stretch.
… prioritizing strength and stability over maximum range of motion.
… moving slowly and with control during transitions.
These adjustments help the body build the muscular support needed to protect hypermobile joints.
The importance of strength
For hypermobile bodies, strength is one of the most important elements of a
sustainable yoga practice. Strength helps stabilize joints, distribute load more
evenly throughout the body, and reduce the risk of injury.
Areas that are particularly important include:
- the deep core muscles
- the glutes and hip stabilizers
- the muscles supporting the shoulder joint
- the small stabilizing muscles around the knees and ankles
When these muscles become stronger and more coordinated, hypermobile practitioners often experience greater comfort, confidence, and resilience in their movement.
When flexibility is balanced with strength and stability, the result can be a practice that feels both expressive and resilient.
Redefining progress
One of the most important shifts for hypermobile practitioners is redefining what progress looks like. In many yoga environments, deeper stretches are often perceived as improvement. But for someone with naturally flexible joints, true progress may look very different.
In other words, progress might mean holding a pose with steady muscular engagement, maintaining joint alignment without locking the joints, building endurance in stabilizing muscles, feeling stronger and more supported in movement…
Hypermobility is not a limitation. Many hypermobile practitioners develop excellent body awareness and fluid movement patterns.
The key is simply understanding what the body needs.
